Brahmgyani Sri Maan Sant Gyani Baba Kirpal Singh Ji’s parent’s names were Dhan Bhai Partap Singh Ji and Dhan Bibi Phool Kaur Ji. Mahapursh’s parents were very devoted Sikhs who were blessed to live at the feet of Dhan Guru Ram Das Ji Maharaj’s house in Amritsar.

Every morning Bhai Sahib and Bibi Ji would get up at amritwela and go to Sackhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji where they would take a bath in Guru Sahib’s sarowar and wait for the arrival of the king of kings, Akaal Purakh himself Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj to arrive from Sachkhand Sri Akaal Thakt Sahib Ji. They would listen to Guru Sahib’s beautiful bani and after receiving Maharaj’s hukam for the day they would then go to see Sant Gyani Baba Amir Singh Ji at Satto Wali Gali where they would listen to katha which was delivered by Mahapursh.

Only after they had seen Guru Ji and heard his bani followed by explanations would they begin their day to day routine. "Why are you so engrossed in worries? Why are you afraid of some one? Who may kill you? The soul is immortal; it neither dies nor takes birth.

The present is here and now, the past is irrecoverable and the future will be good. Don't fret over the past and don't be worried about the future. The present is going on.

Why do you cry? What did you lose? When you were born, what did you bring along, which has been lost? What did you produce which has been perished? It is here that you gained and it is here that you lose. The man comes to; and goes from world, empty handed.

What you own today was not yours yesterday and will not be yours tomorrow. It does not and will not belong to anyone. You consider it your own and rejoice. This happiness of possession leads you to utter grief.

Yours is this world. Start from where you feel to; stay where you desire and wind up where you want to. It has no beginning and no end. You don't fear anyone, but yourself. You are the fright and also the frightened.

Change is the truth of life. What you consider as death is life in reality. In a moment a multi-millionaire is turned pauper. Give up the feeling of possession, great & the mean; differentiation of friend & foe. Then all is yours and you for everyone. Your corporeal being is a product of air, water and fire and it merges into the same leaving behind neither blood nor bones. Still yours existence remains the same. Then ponder over what you are.

Wake up! and become the eternal sons of the Almighty. You are the great and unique manifestation of Nature's power. All the divine powers are possessed by you, like a tree hidden in the seed.

In fact you don't fear anybody; you don't have any worry, suspicion, pain or grief. You are His dear ones. Surrender yourself completely to Him.

Always, remember the "Waheguru" (God) to achieve salvation. Let your life be guided by the saying "Whatever God wills, is good". Be content with the will of God. Remember Him both in pleasure & pain."

“My Meeting with Sant Jarnail Singh Ji

Bibi Inderjit Kaur, sister of Baba Jarnail Singh Ji was married to Sardar Amarjit Singh Ji of Kokri Nagar. When Amrit Sanchar was held in Kokri with my inspiration, Sardar Amarjit Singh along with his family and many others took Amrit. At that time Sant Jarnail Singh Ji stayed at his own place. It was through his brother-in-law that Sant Jarnail Singh Ji got to know me. With my guidance, Amarjit Singh abstained from a non-vegetarian diet, and became Amritdhari. He would visit me often and we would have discourse on knowledge. His grandmother Nand Kaur who belonged to Heran village, had taken Amrit from Sant Baba Kartar Singh Ji of Kikri village. He also blessed her ad told her that in her family a Gurmukh would be born who would guide many people to take Amrit.

In 1978 when the Nirankari crisis occurred, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji was preaching around India in his own bus with his followers. He would wear a sky blue ‘chola’ and a black rounded turban.

I was at Sultanpur at that time and stayed in some simple dwellings made in a field of master Gurbachan Singh Ji. While here I would practise 113 rosaries of Mool Mantar, recite the five banis, Asa-di-war, Sukhmani Sahib, and recite God’s name with each breath. I would at all times keep essence sticks and an oil lamp burning when reciting naam. At both times morning and evening, katha would be performed at ‘Guru ka Bagh’. Later on the request of Shiromani Prabhandak Committee’s member Sardar Hajara Singh Ji Badala, Sardar Puran Singh Ji the manager, Puran Singh Ji, and Sardar Piyara Singh, the katha was also commenced as ‘Ber Sahib’. The dwelling where I now keep residence, stands Dehra Herkhowal, Sultanpur. It was made with the instruction of Sant Baba Roshan Singh Ji. With the efforts and seva of Ishar Singh of Meani who was a high official for grain markers in Sultanpur, the dwelling was built by labourers.

The bus of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji happened to be passing through Sultanpur. At that time, a program was arranged by the Sangat and the committee in remembrance of thirteen Singhs who were martyred, and with my guidance Akhand Path and langar were being held at Ber Sahib.

I was informed that Sant was passing through the town and I decided to meet him. Saddled on a motor cycle driven by Sardar Jaimal Singh Ji we chased Mahapursh and stopped his bus. He embraced me as we saw each other after a long time. I requested him to visit Ber Sahib and take langar, but he said he had other plans. Jokingly however, he said to the other, “Since I have heard this Baba is very strict, I will have to listen to him.”

So he visited Ber Sahib briefly and we discussed its greatness, and related the history of Sultanpur to the Sangat. A Saropa was offered to him from the Saadh Sangat and he was praised. He then pointed out to me that I had never invited him and his group to the samagams I held within the area. I told him that whenever he wished to visit he would be welcomed.
The next time we met was at Taran Taran where we arranged to hold an Amrit Sanchar at Sultanpur. Upon that event, Mahapursh would visit Sultanpur each year along with his group. He would stay at Hatt Sahib and we would do katha, kirtan and Amrit Sanchar there, at Ber Sahib or Gurudwara Guru ka Bagh. The Sangat would gather in their thousands. Before him Sant Kartar Singh Ji and Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji used to do katha there. They would say that Sangat would not get together to hear Katha, but not with the Guru’s grace Sangat was visiting in great numbers. I told Sant Jarnail Singh Ji that the land around this area had been barren for a long time and was not cultivated. I explained that this made the people there less welcoming. With the introduction of a tube well, crops were harvested and thus people started settling in more comfort and that is why there was more Sangat visiting those events. Sant Ji however stated that it was actually because of me that people of the area had started showing an interest in Satsang, as he said I had spread gian in that area. He said the earth there was deficient and the people did not believe in God but by lighting gian I had invoked Sikhi within them."

Sant Ji was at the Village Malseea. A Singh did benti to Sant Ji that they wanted them to go to Shimla. Sant Ji said that they havn't got hukkam from Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa to go to Shimla, but the Singh kept on doing benti to Sant Ji so after a while Sant Ji said to the Singh that they will go to Shimla. Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale once told Sant Giani Kartar Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale that they have got a short life but in their short life they will have to do a lot of work. So when they set of from Village Malseea, they obviously knew what's going to happen, so before they sat in the car, Sant Ji said a pangti which was :

In the car, next to Sant Ji was Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji Garvai. During the journey Sant Ji got the driver to stop the car and Sant Ji swapped places in the car with Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji Garvai. When they got to Ludhiana they had a car accident and Sant Ji got badly injured, but Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji Garvai didn't get any injuries.

The car slipped off the road. Sant Ji then got taken to C.M.C hospital in Ludhiana, on arrival Sant Ji asked some Singh's to go and bring Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa.

The following story is from Katha by Giani Avtar Singh Ji - Badni Kalan Wale. Giani Avtar Singh Ji is the grandson of Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. The katha is entitled "Sikhi di Rehit," it can be found on gurmatveechar.com

About 20 years ago, a family in India was blessed to have a Sri Akhand Paath Sahib of Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj at their house. Giani Avtar Singh Ji attended the Sri Akhand Paath Sahib. The Paathi Singhs recited the Paath with complete Maryada.

The reason for the Akhand Paath was that a young man (youth) in the family had recently died. After his death, the soul of the young man was wandering and eventually the soul possessed his brother. After entering into his brother's body, the soul spoke and requested that the family should do a Sri Akhad Paath Sahib for him.

Giani Ji in his katha says that through this sakhi, we will understand the importance of Gurbani and also the importance, need and greatness of the Sikh identity given to us by Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj.

After the soul requested that an Akhand Paath be done for him, the family members went to a few places to seek help in performing the Sri Akhand Paath Sahib. Eventually, the family came to Giani Avtar Singh Ji and asked him for help. They requested full tyaar par tyaar Singhs (always ready, spiritually elevated Khalsa Singhs) to do the seva of the Akhand Paath Sahib.

Giani Avtar Singh Ji discussed this with some Gurmukh Singhs and they agreed, then they began the Akhand Paath seva. Giani Avtar Singh Ji mentions that he was present at the Bhog (completion) of the Sri Akhand Paath Sahib. That day, the brother of the dead young man was present there too. It is assumed in the Katha, that the soul of the dead young man would enter and leave the body of his brother from time to time.

The family then prepared some food for Giani Avtar Singh Ji and the Singhs. The brother of the dead man was sitting there too. Other family members were present. Then suddenly, the brother began to feel dizzy and was unaware of his surroundings, he then closed his eyes. The family knew exactly what was going on. The family told Giani Avtar Singh Ji that the soul of the dead man is entering into his brother's body now.

Giani Ji says that after hearing this, he was carefully paying attention to see if they were just pretending or not. Then, while speaking to the brother who was possessed, Giani Ji asked, "What is your name?"

Then Giani Ji asked, "What was the purpose of you coming back if you had already died?"

Then the soul spoke and said "I wasn't supposed to die yet, I still had some years left in my life. What happened was, I became unconscious after being electrocuted. Then my family members put milk into my mouth (thinking it might help). I had no idea what was going on. Due to my family pouring milk into my body, I died, because after a person is electrocuted, water/liquid should not be given to that person."

Giani Ji continued speaking with the soul, and then an important question was asked, "After dying, where did you go?"

Giani then pauses the story for a moment, mentioning that only the souls who have died can tell us these things (about the after life). People like us who are still living don't have the knowledge on these matters.

Continuing on, Giani Ji mentions that the soul replied, "I was taken to a very bad place, hell."

"They took me there (Jamdoots - Angels of Death) and I was very miserable and grieving in pain, just by being there."

Giani Ji then asks, "How did you get released from there?"

Soul replied, "One day, the head person (Dharam Raja) came there to inspect and see what was going on." Giani Ji then explains, that whatever body the soul was in before death, those same qualities are then carried on to the after life. The soul mentioned, that he was kesdhari (kept uncut hair) before his death.

Soul continues saying, "When the head person saw that I was kesdhari, he ordered that I be taken out of hell. Then the head person asked me if I have ever done Paath (Sikh prayers). I replied that I only used to do Paath of Jap Ji Sahib before my death, but not other Gurbani prayers and I have never let scissors touch my hair. Then the head person told me that because of these 2 things: not cutting your hair and doing Jap Ji Sahib Paath, you will be released from hell. If you hadn't done these good deeds, you would've been in hell for ages, who knows how long!"

The soul continues on saying, "I then remembered the sakhi when Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj was explaining to a Sikh named Bhai Dhana Ji, that if a Sikh who has never cut his hair enters into hell, I will pull him out of hell by the hair on his head."

Giani Ji explains that the soul was freed from hell because he had never cut his hair and also he had done Paath of Sri Jap Ji Sahib. This is what caused the soul to enter his brother's body, in order to relay the message to his family, to request that an Akhand Paath Sahib be done for him.

Gurbani's power is limitless. It helps us here and in the after life. Even souls that have already died are thirsting for Gurbani and its power.

Jathedar Achhar Singh jee was born in 1893 and joined army when he was still in his teens. Jathedar jee was known for doing kirtan for hours and never getting tired of it. He never could get enough of it. He used to get up just after midnight and immerse himself in Naam and Gurbani paath.

Jathedar jee got stationed in Burma and there he did great sewa of Panth by constructing many Gurdwaras. Due to his sangat, many came into the fold of Sikhi. In 1917, when he came back to Burma after vacationing in Punjab and doing sangat of gursikhs, he refused to wear his kirpan underneath his shirt. He started wearing it over. The officers knew the saintly life of Jathedar jee and did not say anything to him. Some other Sikh soldiers tried to imitate Jathedar jee but were stopped by their officers saying, “Pehlay tumm Achhar Singh Bann jaayo” (First become like Achhar Singh, then do what you want to do).

After retiring from military job, Jathedar jee was appointed by Shiromini Committee to the position of Granthi of Darbar Sahib, Amritsar.

Jathedar jee did this sewa of Granthi of Darbar Sahib for 22 years. In these years, he performed his duties with utmost diligence. He always stood in the way of anyone doing manmatt. In those days to do darshan of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee by lifting rumaalay was very popular. Jathedar jee opposed this manmatt and eventually stopped it from happening at Darbar Sahib. To do darshan of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee, the right thing is to do paath of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee and not lift up the rumaalay and get physical darshan. Jathedar jee stopped this practice at Darbar Sahib.

Once some gursikhs came and had an Akhand Paath Sahib of Dasam Granth done at Akal Takhat Sahib. This was the first time an Akhand Paath of Dasam Granth was done at Akal Takhat Sahib and no one knew how to approach this issue. Jathedar jee took a very strong stand and opposed the akhand paath of Dasam Granth from Akal Takhat Sahib. He said that our Guru was only Guru Granth Sahib alone. From that time, Dasam Granth akhand paath never happened there.

In 1955, along with Granthi of Darbar Sahib, he was appointed the jathedar of Siri Akal Takhat Sahib. Jathedar jee was a Singh of puraatan style (old style) and had no fear for anyone but Guru Sahib. In 1961, when Sant Fateh Singh, the Akali leader incited Master Tara Singh to break his fast, Jathedar jee called both Sant Fateh Singh and Master Tara Singh for peshi at Siri Akal Takhat Sahib. Master Tara Singh had performed ardaas that he would not eat anything till the Delhi Government yielded to their demand of having a real state of Punjab. When Master jee’s condition became very critical, after many days of fasting, Sant Fateh Singh and the working committee of Akali Dal, passed a resolution and forced Master jee to break his fast of many days.
Jathedar jee gave exemplary tankhah to both leaders and cautioned them against such acts in the future.

In his last days he lived in total contentment. His simple life-style proved that he had led a life free of corruption and sin. He had a simple house with two rooms and he breathed his last there His overall personality was very impressive. He was full of Khalsa spirit to give up his life for chardi kala of Panth.

There were once two boys who both used to visit a statue of Shiv Ji which was near their village. The first boy used to visit Shiv Ji’s statue to pray and seek their blessings whereas the second boy would visit Shiv Ji’s statue to hurl stones at it. Although the first boy used to come earlier in the day the second boy used to spend just as much time with Shiv Ji’s statue. Unlike the first boy the second boy had to come under the cover of darkness as to throw stones at Shiv Ji’s statue was a great sin which would be severely punished if anyone caught the boy in the act.

One day as the first boy was about to set off to visit the statue it started to rain very heavily. The boy looked outside his window and decided to wait until the rain had stopped. As soon as the rain eased up the boy set foot outside but was called back by his mother who told him that diner was ready. The boy thought for a while and then decided that he would go and visit the statue after he had finished eating. When the boy finished eating, he quickly got up and went outside. As he was walking towards the statue his father who was coming back from work caught hold of him and told him to go back to the house as it was now very dark. The boy protested but in the end did what his father asked him to do.

As all this was happening the clouds opened up again and rain began to fall to the earth once more. The second boy who was at home picked up some stones and headed towards the statue. Although the boy could hear his mother he ignored her as he thought that he could eat his food after he had thrown the stones at Shiv Ji’s statue. On the way to the statue the boy met many people who told him to come into their homes so that he wouldn’t get wet and catch a cold. Despite their pleas the boy ignored them and continued on his way.

When he reached Shiv Ji’s statue he started throwing stones in the usual way. The second boy was the only person who visited Shiv Ji’s statue that day.

Shiv Ji pleased with the dedication of the boy took the form of an old man and appeared before him. The old man said, “What do you want from this world son? Is there anything that I can give you?”

The boy looked at the old man and started laughing. He then said, “Can you really give me anything?”

The old man nodded his head. The boy still laughing said, “Ok, give me big horns.”

As soon as the boy said this horns began to grow from his head. When he returned to the village people began to hurl stones at him and eventually after being hit many times he died.

Once a beggar, who was inflicted with leprosy heard about the greatness of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj and his beloved Sikh, Sant Baba Harnaam Singh Ji. The beggar slowly made his way to where Sant Ji was staying and asked Sant Ji’s students if he could meet Sant Ji. The students took the beggar to Sant Ji. After bowing before the King of this world and the next, Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj the beggar exchanged greetings with Sant Ji. He then said, “Oh Saint of saints, beloved of Guru Nanak, light of Akaal Purakh I have heard of thousands of people being healed by your holy sight. Please be merciful and shower this cripple with your grace.”

Sant Ji looked at the beggar and said, “You are wrong. I am a mere mortal who has no such powers. If you want to be healed then Gurbani and only Gurbani can do this such is the power of the house of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.”

Sant Ji then told his students to take the beggar to the sarovaar and help him take a bath. He then requested them to wrap the beggar in a white sheet and to bring him into Darbar Sahib.

When the beggar was brought back Sant Ji and his students did an ardas before reciting Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji thirteen times. It took almost 15 hours to complete the thirteen recitations. After the recital was complete Sant Ji did another ardas in front of Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. At the conclusion of this ardas Sant Ji himself removed the white sheet, which the beggar was covered in to reveal a completed cured individual.

Sant Ji then said, “Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj’s holy feet have cured you through his bani, Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji. Contemplate on the name of Akaal Purakh and live a honest and truthful life.”

Kauda Raakash and Bhai Mardana Ji

Once Guru Sahib and Bhai Mardana jee were travelling through a jungle. Bhai Mardana was feeling home-sick and asked Guru Sahib to go home but Guru Sahib asked him to wait a little longer. Bhai Mardana could not wait any longer and insisted on leaving right away. When Bhai Mardana persisted, Guru Sahib told him to go if he wanted to.

Guru Sahib sat there in the thick forest and went in smadhi. On the other hand, Bhai Mardana who was heading home, got trapped in a trap set by a carnivorous human – Kauda Raakash. Kauda Raakash is said to a very cruel person and ate human flesh. He used to kill humans and eat them.

When Kauda Raakash saw Bhai Mardana, he was very happy to see a healthy young man trapped. He tied Bhai Mardana jee’s legs and arms and brought him to his cave. There he had a big pan (karaahee) with oil in it. He used to fry them alive.

Now as Bhai Mardana was trapped, he realized his mistake of not listening to Guru Sahib. He found out that if one does not listen to Guru Sahib, one has to suffer immensely. He now sat there and started calling out to Guru Sahib for help.

Guru Nanak Sahib who was jaani-jaan (all knowing) heard the pleas of Bhai Mardana and reached the spot where Bhai Mardana was tied. He was behind the bushes and saw the frightened face of Bhai Mardana jee. He laughed and whispered, “Kyon Mardaniya, ghar nahi giya?” (So Mardana, why did you not go home). Guru Sahib was joking with Bhai Mardana jee.

Bhai Mardana was thrilled to see Guru Sahib arrive. At the same time he pleaded with Guru jee to forgive him and not joke with him. He begged Guru Sahib to release him. Guru Sahib kept joking with him.

By this time, Kauda Raakash came out and lifted Bhai Mardana jee to throw him in the huge kaRaahee full of boiling oil. Bhai Mardana jee started screaming and pleading to Guru Sahib but Guru Sahib kept quiet and just smiled. Kauda Raakash had not noticed Guru Sahib by this time.

Just as he was about to throw Bhai Mardana jee in the pan, Guru Sahib came out and asked Kauda Rakash to stop. Kauda Rakash was shocked to see someone there and defiantly refused to do so. As he looked at the face of Guru Sahib, he broke inside. Still he kept his composure and tried to threaten Guru Sahib.

Guru Sahib had came to rescue Kauda Raakash from this terribly sinful life he had. He showered Kauda Rakash with his divine grace. Kauda Rakash felt something very strange inside him but still his haume (ego) was not letting him obey an unarmed harmless looking person. He unwillingly threw Bhai Mardana jee in the pan full of hot burning oil.

Bhai Mardana jee screamed but did not feel anything. Kauda Raakash was surprised when he noticed that the oil in the pan was at normal temperature. He immediately knew that it was the work of Guru Nanak Sahib. At this time, he could not resist anymore and dashed at the lotus feet of Guru Sahib.

Guru Sahib did more kirpa and with the touch of Guru Sahib’s feet, Kauda Rakash’s sins washed away and he realized how bad he had been. He begged for Jeevan-daat. He begged before Guru Sahib for mercy.

Guru Sahib knew that Kauda Raakash was feeling genuine remorse. He lifted him up and gave him Amrit Naam. It is written in Janam Saakhis, that Guru Sahib opened all his gupt senses and made him a jyot vigaasi Sikh in one moment. Kauda Raakash had immense kamaayee from previous lives. He was just waiting for Satguru Nanak Dev jee's mohar (seal) on his kamaayee. Guru Sahib blessed Kauda Raakash and instructed him to do parchaar of Sikhi and open a Dharamshala (Gurdwara) in his area.

I am quite well here with the blessings of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. I hope all of you are in the best of health. My dear mother, you kept me in your womb for nine months and then gave birth to me. Many times in the severe winter season of December and January I slept comfortably while you had to sleep on the wet side of the bed. You suffered many discomforts and troubles due to me while bringing me up. You had a desire that I would earn a lot of money for you when I grow up. I failed to fulfil your desire and I did not earn any money for you even though you brought me up facing so many problems. You sent me to such a wonderful place, which is denied even to those who have done a lot of meditation and prayers. How can I repay you for this kindness? As you sent me to a place like that and on account of the blessings of Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj no one will even ask you for the accounts of your deeds. All of you will go straight to the laps of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj where you will rest for eternity.

Baba Ji's Bachan

With the 3rd barsi of Sant Gyani Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale coming up next month the enviable questions about Baba Ji’s eternal bachan begin to pop up everywhere from Gurudwaras to Internet forums. I have constantly stated that I have no qualms about people doubting or even insulting Baba Ji’s bachan as that sin belongs to them alone. Usually I don’t bother posting anything relating to Baba Ji’s bachan however a brother of mine has requested a small post about it.

Many Sikhs have probably heard the name of Sant Baba Bir Singh Ji Naurangabad. Baba Ji was a soldier in the Khalsa army under the leadership of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji.

One time in the town of Panj Tara a group of Pathans had insulted some Sikhs and had begun a rebellion. To subdue this insurgency a battalion of the Khalsa army was dispatched. Baba Bir Singh Ji was included in this battalion.

Baba Ji fought with such courage and valour that he was at the head of the army leading the charge. In the heat of the battle Baba Ji became separated from his brothers in arms. The Pathans seeing the great soldier of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj alone decided to surround him and kill him. As Baba Ji was fighting off their constant assaults his sword broke in two. The Singhs who saw what had happened lost all hope for his survival as they were too far to reach him.

As the Pathans began to move in for the kill Baba Ji prayed to Akaal Purakh to save him. As Baba Ji uttered this prayer he vanished into thin air and reappeared behind the Khalsa army to lead the charge once again.

Beloved Khalsa of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj it has happened before and according to the will of Akaal Purakh it will happen again.

The Late Examination

In 1943 a Sikh of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj whose name I have now forgotten was studying for his end of year university exams. This Sikh used to mediate on the name of Waheguru in the early hours of the morning after completing his nitnem.

One day when he was fully immersed in this mediation he completely forgot about the time and finished his prayers much later that day at 7:00am. After regaining consciousness he realised that his examination, which he had spent months preparing for, was due to start at 7.30am. This Sikh lived about 40 minutes away from his university and had still not got ready. In addition to this before beginning the day this Sikh would go to Sri Nanaksar Sahib Ji to seek the blessings of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj and have a glimpse of Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji. Even though he was very late there was no way he would miss going to Sri Nanaksar Sahib Ji that day.

Although in his heart he was really broken about missing his examination when Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji asked him how he was he simply smiled and said that he was in chardeekala. Baba Ji knew that this Sikh was late for his examination and he said, ‘Something is definitely wrong, you don’t seem happy today’. Even though the Sikh denied this time and time again Baba Ji still would insist something was wrong. Finally the Sikh told Baba Ji what had happened.

Baba Ji then said, ‘An ardas done with full faith, devotion and love is one of the strongest weapons a Sikh possesses.’ He then took the Sikh in front of Guru Sahib and humbly begged Guru Ji to help his beloved Sikh in his hour of need. Once the ardas was completed Baba Ji said to the Sikh, ‘That Guru of the world knows what resides in everyone’s heart. He himself will protect you and carry you in his most caring hands. Keep your faith in him my dear son.’ The Sikh left Sri Nanaksar Sahib Ji and proceeded to his examination hall with renewed hope and faith.

When the Sikh arrived at the examination hall he saw all the students still standing outside. When he asked some of his friends what had happened they told him that the examination bell was out of order. When this Sikh looked up at the bell he saw those most caring hands of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj holding the bell, which stopped it from ringing. A few minutes later the bell began to work and the students went into the examination hall. Needless to say the Sikh passed his exam with flying colours.

Baba Attar Singh was in the army and posted at Kohat in the Artillery Regiment, where he remained for one year.

He remained a bachelor and refused to be married. He had a very great yearning to go to Hazur Sahib. So he left the regiment and started on foot for Hazur Sahib. From his childhood he had no attachment with worldly affairs and he remained thinking of Gurbani, naam, Gurus and Akal Purakh.

He started on foot from Kohat, throughout meditating on Naam. His mind became ever fixed upon the shabad. He continued travelling on foot, day and night, in this way. Sometimes he would take some rest and would prepare his food after taking flour etc. from some Gurdwaras in the way. His mind continued to yearn to reach the sacred Gurdwara of Hazur Sahib and to rub the sacred dust of that place on his body. He would utter Wah while lifting his left food and Guru while lifting his right foot.

In due course, Sant ji reached Abchal Nagar (Hazur Sahib). He at once entered the Gurdwara after necessary ablutions and bowed before the Satguru in most respectful way and obeyed the mandate. H had already surrendered his body, mind and riches and all that he possessed to the True Guru.

Stayed at Nagina Ghat for one year and seven months

Baba jee now began to stay at the Nagina Ghat near the River Godavari. After a few days he began to tie a small turban of khaddar on his head and put off all other clothes except the kacherra. He would keep a small towel with him.

Continuous Meditation

He now began constant meditation ie. worship of God and Naam. If some food was given, he would take it, otherwise he remained contented by sipping the water of river Godavari. He had given strict orders that only one parshada with some cooked pulses, placed on it, should be brought for him. This was complied with by his attendant. IN this way, he stayed at Nagina Ghat for about one year and sevn months. During his stay at Nagina Ghat, he would spend nights in a small stone build hut where he would remain engaged in meditation. He would repeat the moo mantar accompanied by some more shabads. These countless recitations were unique in themselves. He wouldn’t talk with anyone during this period. He was most humble and would fall at the feet of any Sikh who came to meet him,. Even is someone uttered harsh words, he would remain silent. He would sweep the main Gurdwara Sahib (Darbar Sahib) with a broom and would bring water for its washing.

True Stories

One day Sant ji started walking on the bank of the Godavari. AT a distance of nearly three miles he began meditation for nearly ten days without food. Bhai Nanu Singh, the head pujari of Darbar Sahib saw a vision one night and heard a voice say “Our dear Sikh is standing in meditation in the river for the last eight days without any food. Serve him food.”

Next morning, Bhai Nanu Singh cooked food and walked ont eh bank for about two miles but finding no one, returned back. One the same night he again heard a voice “You have not served food to our beloved Sikh.” He replied, “Sir, I tried to contact him but could not find him anywhere.” The voice answered, “Walk for three miles and then you will find him”.

On the following morning, he again took food and went for three miles on the bank of the river. Now he say Sant ji standing in the knee deep water. When Sant ji opened his yes, he saw Bhai Nanu Singh and asked, “How have you come here?”

Bhai Nanu Singh explained his dream and offered food to Sant Ji. He refused to eat anything. Bhai Nanu Singh then said, “ I shall not be able to sleep. Kindly accept my humble offer” Then Sant ji warned Bhai Nanu Singh not to tell anyone of this episode and took some food.

Cobra Came to Pay respects

Once when Sant ji was in deep meditation at Gautam Ghat, the attendeant who brought food for him noticed a big cobra sitting near Sant ji with its hood fully spread. The attendant was horrified at first but when he neared Sant Ji, the cobra left the place. Sant ji opened his eyes and said, “This beloved being came to give it’s darshan to me”

Jumping in the River

Sant ji in due course visted and paid homage at all the Gurdwaras near Hazur Sahib. He visted these on foot. NO nearly two years had passed in meditation at Hazur Sahib. He was extremely anxious to see the sight of the tenth Satguru but had not succeeded. One day, he decided to jump in the deep water of river Godavari so that his physical body should be sacrificed before the Satguru. He jupmed in but some mysterious power took him alive on the bank and said, “You are my Sikh. Be alert. You have to give Khande da Amrit to many persons in Punjab and other places. You have to spread the message of peace in the entire world with the help of Sat Naam.” He also heard, “If you want to have my sight come at Nagina Ghat at midnight.” Sant ji anxiously awaited for that time.

When he reached Nagina Ghat at the time, he saw the Tenth Satguru sitting on a throne surrounded by the punj pyaaray, chaar sahibzade and many others. Sant ji prostrated and paid all respects. As to what happened subsequently is not told to anyone by Sant ji.

A few days after this, Sant ji Maharaj decided to return to Punjab. He offered respectful prayers for safe return. Bhai Nanu Singh offered, as a respectful gift, some clothes to Sant Ji but he refused to take these.

One time according to the will of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj Sant Gyani Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale fell seriously ill and was brought to the Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji hospital in Amritsar.

As this was happening Sant Gyani Baba Kirpal Singh Ji who was sitting in mediation had a vision of what was happening. After this vision passed Sant Ji immediately got up and told the Singhs with him to prepare langar for Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji and for the other Singhs who had accompanied him to Amritsar. The Singhs quickly began to prepare the langar and after an ardas was made to Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj Sant Kirpal Singh Ji and the Singhs with him set of to Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji hospital.

Upon reaching the hospital Sant Kirpal Singh Ji was taken to the room in which Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji was admitted. When Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji saw Sant Kirpal Singh Ji enter the room he immediately got up from his bed and moved towards the door to greet his beloved brother who he had never seen. Both Gurmukhs said their fateh and embraced one another.

Sant Kirpal Singh Ji then tried to sit on the floor but was stopped by Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji who quickly grabbed Sant Ji’s hands and said, ‘In you I see the light which was with Sant Amir Singh Ji and Sant Sunder Singh Ji. You are a true Brahmgyani who has already merged with Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Your place is not on the floor but on my head.’
Tears began to fall from Sant Kirpal Singh Ji’s eyes as Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji led him towards his bed and made him sit there. Sant Kirpal Singh Ji and the Singhs with him stayed with Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji during his time in the hospital where both Gurmukhs would do vichaar on Gurbani.

What an amazing sight that must have been as the two jathedhars of Guru Ji’s Taksal explained the meanings of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj which Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj had blessed Bhai Mani Singh Ji and Baba Deep Singh Ji with at Sachkhand Sri Damdama Sahib Ji.

When Sant Ji was discharged from hospital the jatha and him went and stayed with Sant Kirpal Singh Ji many times.

The King and his garden

There was once a king who was very religious. After his death he wanted to appoint someone who would be very responsible, smart, kind and religious so he created a garden. This garden was so beautiful with all the flowers that a person would just keep looking and never move the whole day. After flowers and trees, came tasty foods, so tasty that person’s stomach would get full but his mind would want more and more. Then, the king had beautiful women dancing who were so beautiful that even holy saints would lose their character. After this he built a palace with gold, silver, diamonds and everything. This palace was so huge that a person would get lost in it. Beautiful paintings were placed on the walls and carpets on the floor, things which a person would never have seen in his life. After building all this, the King made an announcement that anyone who finds him in the garden would be the next king. Many smart people and holy sadhus came to find the king.

In the morning, everyone entered the garden. Some people just stopped looking at the flowers, some were stopped by tasty food, some by beautiful women. A few holy sadhus made it to the palace. There they searched and searched but failed they found nothing. One sadhu who was smarter than others came outside the palace and thought for a minute. He remembered that the king said he would be anywhere in the garden. So he started looking around. He found a big heap full of dirt, and garbage. He then went there and demolished it. Underneath this sadhu found a door which he opened. When he did this he saw some stairs which he began to walk downwards on. At the bottom of the stairs he found the king meditating. Seeing the sadhu the king became very happy. The King got up and gave everything to the sadhu just as he had promised.

Now, how is this related to Sikhi? Well, this world is full of idiots, smart and holy people. All get on the path to find the king (Waheguru).

Some stop just by entering which means waste their lives by believing that this body is everything and after this there is nothing.

Some say “Eh Jagg Mitta Agla Kis Dittha” and fail.

Some see some “mandals” or worlds in the body waste their time by enjoying it.
Some try little harder and get some ridhi sidhi and busy themselves in these fake powers so this ridhi sidhi becomes those dancing women.

Some try harder and get to the palace covered with diamonds and gold. This is the “dasam duar”. Many stop here and think “this is it”. They get busy with “anhad shabad” and sounds and stop looking for the “King”.

Some Guru De Pyare are not satisfied with all this. They keep looking. They know from Gurbani that the “King” has to be here somewhere. They look around and find a big heap of “haumai”. They demolish it and Waheguru the king appears meditating. Both meet and become one. Those Gursikhs become one with Waheguru or become the King.

Bhai Nihaal Singh (Sant Baba Harnam Singh Ji) was born in the year 1813 to Bhai Boorh Singh Ji and Mata Pradhan Kaur Ji. Those of you who have been lucky enough to have heard the life story of Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji will know what an amazing sikh of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj he was.

One story, which sticks out for me, is when Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji requested Sant Baba Raam Singh Ji to teach him how to mediate.

Sant Baba Raam Singh Ji said, ‘You should recite Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji with single minded focus on its meanings; because Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji is the essence of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj’s philosophy’.

Bhai Nihal Singh Ji then asked, ‘How many times should I recite Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji daily’?

Sant Ji replied, ‘As you start reciting you will yourself realize how many times you should do it’.

From that day on Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji started reciting Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji. After a few weeks Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji was reciting Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji one hundred and one times a day.

Sant Baba Raam Singh Ji approached Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji and asked him how far he had travelled on the pathway to the lotus feet of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.

Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji told Sant Ji that, ‘with Guru Sahib’s kirpa I have managed to recite Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji one hundred and one times per day’.

Sant Ji smiled and said, ‘that is a good start but you are still aware of the number. If you wish to find Guru Sahib you should progress to such a level where counting becomes immaterial’.

From that day on Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji began the non-stop recitation of Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji all day and all night. Even while Bhai Nihaal Singh Ji slept Sri Jap Ji Sahib Ji could be heard from his holy mouth.

The Egotistical Cobra Kirtani

One time as Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji was sat in the congregation a big cobra entered the diwan hall. All the sangat who saw this snake got scared and some sevadaars even began to draw their kirpans to kill the cobra.

Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji saw what was happening and told the sangat, ‘Do not kill the snake, it has completed it’s life and is preparing to leave this world. Let the snake come and be blessed with the sight of that Guru of this world and the next.’

The sangat who had gathered at the diwan hall immediately made way for the cobra. As the cobra approached Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj it raised it’s hood and began to hiss. Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji then did an ardas on behalf of the cobra. At the conclusion of the ardas the snake left the diwan hall and went back into the fields from which it had come.

The sangat were curious as to what had happened and thus asked Baba Ji to enlighten them. Baba Ji said, ‘The cobra you have all seen today used to be a kirtani. The kirtani had an amazing voice and many people would request/pay him to come to their programmes. Unfortunately this kirtani built up a lot of ego as maya took control of his mind. However because of the kirtan he did he only had to pass through a few life forms before Guru Sahib blessed him with a human life once again. The kirtani knows this life form is his last one and decided to come and ask the sangat and Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj for their blessings so that when he takes birth as a human once again he may remain free from the five vices which have torn him away from his Guru.

Baba Gurbaksh Singh jee was a blessed soul who had the opportunity to do sangat with Sant Attar Singh Mastuana.

Gayatri Mantar

One day, after divaan, Baba Gurbaksh Singh jee approached Sant Attar Singh and asked, “Many people say that doing paath of the Gayatri Mantar is very powerful. Which Mantar is this?”

Sant jee replied, “For Gursikhs, Satguru jee’s Mukhvaak chhan is the Gayatri Mantar. It is even more powerful than the Gayatri Mantar. It is ‘Gobinday mukhanday udaaray apaaray hareean(n) kareean(g) nirnaam akaamay”

Baba Gurbaksh Singh jee began to do jaap of this mantar with great faith. After Sant Attar Singh departed from the area, he did a chaleehaa (40 day jaap) of this mantar as well in which he would do 31 malas (108 beads in one mala) of this jaap.

After a few months, Baba jee again did another chaleeha and in total did 5 of them at various times. Baba jee began to feel a certain ras from doing this paath in side him. It was very pleasurable to do the paath.

Continued Jaap & Confusion

After some time, Baba Gurbaksh Singh for a total of 6 months repeated this paath. Then for the next 6 months repeated “Vahiguru gurmantar” . After doing this, Baba jee began to feel the same pleasure in doing jaap of both. Baba jee began to wonder sometimes that Gurmantar should give more ‘ras’ but both are giving the same.

Baba jee at this time kept doing jaap of both but the confusion grew. He was not sure why both mantars were giving the same pleasure to him.

It was winter time and the day of 22 Maghar ended and night fell at village Ghudiala in Jalandhar. After sleeping for the first quarter of the night, Baba jee awoke at 1am according to his nitnem. Everything was dark around him. Baba jee softly repeated, “namo andhkaaray namo tej tejay…”

Vision of Sant Mandali

Upon repeating this tuk, Baba jee’s consciousness was pulled inwards. He saw a spherical realm within which there was complete light. Within it, in golden lettering, were written the words “Sant Mandal” or “realm of the Saints”. Baba jee entered the realm and saw there were many spiritually glowing souls within. In the centre of all the souls was a supreme glowing light. Baba jee realized that the extremely glowing jot was Guru Nanak. Just as he had seen in some pictures, there was a simrana surrounding Guru Sahib’s dastaar.

Baba jee lovingly bowed and then sat off to one side. Baba jee saw one glowing spirit say to another “Jap Gurmantar!” the second then said to a third “Jap maha-mantar!”. The third then said to a fourth, “Jap Vahiguru Mantar!”

Baba jee was hearing these voices in a state which was neither waking nor asleep. He was seeing and hearing everything with his soul’s eyes and ears. He did not know what avasthaa this was but he could perceive everything perfectly.

Baba jee’s eyes then opened and his consciousness returned. His body was feeling very light and inside he could taste an amazing ‘ras’.

Meeting Again with Sant Attar Singh

Baba Gurbaksh Singh after some time went with other Sangat from his area to meet Sant Attar Singh who was staying in Sangrur in those days. Baba jee related his experiences with his jaap of the Gayatri Mantar and Gurmantar to Sant jee and also about the vision he had seen of Sant Mandali.

Sant Attar Singh said to Baba Gurbaksh Singh, “to remove your doubts, Guru Nirankaar gave you an answer that the jaap of a shabad or chhand is only for a certain time or purpose. Regular simran and abhyaas should only be done of Maha Mantar of Gurmantar ie. Vahiguru Mantar.

After hearing Sant Attar Singh confirm his belief, Baba Gurbaksh Singh until his end continued to do abhyaas of Vahiguru Gurmantar with complete faith and determination.

In Sherpura village there was no Gurudwara; but a naked udasi sadhu who used to live in a shack outside the village kept a saroop of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and advised all the villagers to come and bow before the king of kings before starting their work in the morning.
One day Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji asked the udasi sadhu several questions on where Akaal Purakh is and how one could find him?

The udasi sadhu said, ‘Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj contains Akaal Purakh’s word and one should search Guru Ji in order to reach him.’

On further questioning by Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji the udasi sadhu said, ‘Young lion of Guru Ji, you seem to have a discerning intellect. You are asking me questions that are beyond my comprehension. If you want answers to all your questions then you should go to Sachkhand Sri Hazoor Sahib Ji where the spiritual power of the tenth master, Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the king of kings and the saint of saints resides’.

These words of the sadhu got engraved on Sant Ji’s heart.

Once, Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji visited Kohat, in the Northwest Frontier Province, on an invitation from the Sangat there. Upon Sant Ji’s arrival two Sikhs came to the railway station to receive him. From the railway station the Sikhs and Sant Ji took a tonga to go to the city.

On the way to the city a few Pathans caught sight of Sant Ji. After studying the glow around his face and looking at his simple attire they assumed that he must be a messenger of Akaal Purakh. The Pathans began to run after the tonga until they managed to get it to stop. When the tonga stopped the Pathans in their native language began to speak.

One of the Sikhs who Sant Ji was travelling with began to translate what the pathans were saying. Bhai Aroor Singh looked at Baba Ji and said, ‘these pathans are begging you to do an ardas on their behalf for rain. They say it hasn’t rained here for three years. If this barren spell continues their children will be dead within the month.’

Sant Ji looked towards the skies and told Bhai Aroor Singh to tell the Pathans to go back to their homes and to pray to Akaal Purakh for rain. Bhai Sahib did as he was told but the pathans did not move. Instead they kept standing in front of the tonga whilst repeating their request over and over again.

Eventually Sant Ji began to sing a shahbad on the roadside. As Sant Ji was singing the skies were ripped open by Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj as rain began to fall.

During my stay in Punjab this summer I spent a lot of time at Sri Nanaksar Sahib Ji where I met countless Gursikhs who were oozing with Naam and Simran. There were many old Singhs present who shared many stories with me about Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji. This is one of the first ones I heard:

A Sikh of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj who lived near Daya Basti in Dehli had come with his entire family to Sri Nanaksar Sahib Ji to be blessed with the darshan of Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and Guru Ji’s beloved sevadaar Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji.

The entire family were greatly moved by Sant Ji and the other sangat, who had gathered at the Thaat. Back in Dehli a thief who had been watching their house for some days decided to break in and steal all their valuable clothing, jewellery and other expensive items. He thought that no one would be at home as they had all gone to see some so called holy man.

When no one was looking the thief broke into the house and threw whatever he could find into a big suitcase. Once his suitcase was full he decided to wait until nightfall so that no one would see him leave. When it was dark the thief began to drag the overflowing suitcase outside of the house. To his surprise when he stopped to look at the gate he saw an old man standing guard with a big stick. The thief hid for a while and waited for the old man to go. After half an hour the thief decided to leave the house by going through the roof. When the thief began to climb the stairs he saw the same old man standing on top of the roof waiting with a big stick in his hands.

The thief couldn’t believe his eyes. He quickly ran back into the house with the suitcase and threw some cold water on himself. After sitting down for a while he decided to check on the front gate. To his surprise the old man had disappeared. The thief smiled and ran towards the gate with the suitcase. As soon as he came within a metre of the gate the old man appeared again. The thief quickly turned around and went back to the roof only to find the old man wielding his stick up there too.
In this way the thief kept on going towards the front gate and then up towards the roof only to find Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji stating at him. The thief began to cry and repent as he started to crawl towards the gate without the suitcase. This time the old man did not stand in front of the gate and instead he allowed the thief to leave the house. As the thief closed the gate behind him a thought passed through his head that perhaps the old man was just his mind playing tricks on him. After thinking like this for a few minutes he made up his mind to try and take the suitcase one last time. As the thief turned and looked over the gate he saw the old man carrying the suitcase on his head back into the house.

After a few days the thief returned to the house to meet the owner and his family to apologise for his misdeeds. The thief told the family the whole story about the Saint who had protected their house. When the thief found out it was the same Baba that the family had gone to visit he immediately begged them to take him there. After a long journey the thief was finally blessed with a glimpse of Baba Ji who looked into the thief’s heart and saw that he was truly sorry for all the wrongs he had done in his life. Baba Ji then performed an ardas to Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj to forgive the thief and to bless him with a gursikhi jeevan. It is said that the thief subsequently became a Singh who devoted his entire life to Guru Ji’s Sikhs.

Apologies for being away for so long.

Before posting anything else I’d like to catch up on all the subjects people have asked me to post on, starting with the jeevan of Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji and other Nanaksar Sants followed by some stories of the Sevadaars of Bhai Mani Singh Ji’s Taksaal.

I know I’ve promised to post jeevanis of our beloved sisters and mothers who drank the sweet nectar of martyrdom to honour the oath made by the Khalsa Panth in 1986. Many of these jeevanis are now ready and will be published shortly.

Bhai Satnam Singh Ji was a devoted Gursikh who had a lot of love for Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib owned the Quality hotel, which is situated at Pahar Ganj in Dehli.

There were a number of different rooms in Bhai Sahib’s hotel, which spanned several floors. On the top floor Bhai Sahib used to keep spare bed sheets and pillowcases. In January 2001 some how a fire broke out which threatened to burn the entire hotel to the ground. A service man who was performing his usual duties in one of the rooms on the top floor noticed smoke seeping through the corridor. He immediately left what he was doing to find the source of the smoke. As the serviceman walked along the corridor he could feel the temperature increasing as flames began to spread along the walls. The serviceman began to fear for his life and immediately began to run towards the stairs to alert Bhai Satnam Singh Ji. As he did this he caught a glimpse of an old pious looking man who was wielding a large stick. According to the service man wherever the stick would go the fire began to dance in that direction.

As the serviceman began to run towards Bhai Satnam Singh Ji’s house he thought that his mind was playing tricks on him; it simply was not possible for any man to stand inside a ring of fire and make it move wherever he pleased. After a few minutes lost in thought the service man reached Bhai Sahib’s house. When he entered the house he quickly met Bhai Satnam Singh Ji and informed him of what was happening at the hotel. As he was conveying this message the serviceman noticed a portrait of the same old man he had seen a few minutes earlier. In a soft voice the service man asked Bhai Sahib whose picture that was. Bhai Sahib smiled and said, ‘it is Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji’.

When Bhai Sahib and the service man reached the hotel the fire had been completely extinguished by Baba Ji.

One day when Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji was visiting the city of Hyderabad, in the province of Sind, he happened to pass by the local mental institution. Sant Ji expressed a desire to see the mentally sick people who resided in that instituion.

A Singh who was with Sant Ji went and asked the person in charge of the hospital if Sant Ji could come and visit the patients. The person in charge of the hospital had heard about the greatness of Sant Attar Singh Ji and was therefore more than happy to let this flower of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj enter and bless that place with his presence.

When Sant Ji first went inside the hospital, the patients were making all kinds of noises and doing all sorts of things which any normal person would not do. Sant Ji immediately sat down on the floor and began to do kirtan.

As soon as Gurbani began to resound throughout the hospital every single patient came and sat around Sant Ji with their eyes closed and their minds completely focused on the shahbad. When Sant Ji had finished doing Kirtan he did an ardas to Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, the king of kings and the saint of saints. At the conclusion of this ardas Sant Ji told the man in charge that Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj has done his most amazing kirpa and had cured all the patients of all their maladies.

Many doctors who were working at the hospital at the time who had witnessed this event came and examined each patient individually. To their amazement every single patient was completely cured. All of them were subsequently discharged and sent home.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Dhan Guru Ramdas Sahib jee was doing kaar-sewa of sarovar at Siri Harmandir Sahib - Siri Amritsar Sahib. A lot of sangat used to do sewa in digging the sarovar and doing other kind of sewa. Soma Arora used to to sell ghunganiyaan (a kind of snack) to residents of Siri Amritsar Sahib and this way made his living.

One day in the evening Guru Sahib saw him and asked him how much vattee (profit) he had made. He came over to Guru Sahib and did matha tek and with extreme humility answered Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib asked him to hand over his all day’s earnings. Soma did not hesitate for a bit and placed all he had at the charan of Dhan Guru Ramdas Sache Paatshah jee.

Soma was a very poor person and met his ends with great difficulty. Second day too, Guru Sahib asked him how much he had earned and asked him to give all his earnings to him. Guru Sahib kept doing this for 5 days. Soma who was always broke, did not have any doubts on Guru Sahib. He trusted Guru Sahib one hundred percent and believed that Guru Sahib knows better.

On the sixth day, Soma saw Guru Sahib at the Sarovar looking at the sangat doing sewa, with full Kirpa-Drishtee (gaze of grace). This time Soma did not wait for Guru Sahib to ask for the money but he came, matha tekked Guru Sahib and placed all his earning at the lotus feet of Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib, who was only testing Soma, was extremely pleased at Soma and said, "Ajj asee laina nahi, kuchh dena hai. Ajj taun tu Soma nahi, Soma Shah hoiya" (Shah means very rich person).

Guru Sahib’s bachan of calling Soma, Soma Shah, forced the abundant force of Vaheguru’s power to come in action. Within days Soma became a shah. He became a shah of not only money but also of Naam.

This is a great saakhi and we can learn a lot from this. We all know that all that we have has been given to us by Satguru but yet when it is our turn to do some sewa or give back something to Guru Sahib or his panth, we find thousand reasons not to do so. We become selfish. May Guru Sahib give us the wisdom of Bhai Soma Shah.
